When it’s time to do something else

One of the best and probably scariest things about approaching a job search is the prospect of starting over in some way. When you’ve put time, effort, and energy into building your skill set to compliment your chosen job path, it might feel hard to think about starting the process again, but it might totally be worth it.

There are many examples of success stories that others have achieved later in life after pivoting to a new career path, and while those stories can resonate, they also never address how that person struggled, figured out how to pay bills, and all the other really rough steps that they had to encounter on their way to success, which in my opinion, are also equally as motivating. It’s about balance. Because while there’s success at the other end of adversity, the road to get there is important to understand, too.

If you’re considering making a career pivot into a radically different field or industry, my unsolicited advice for you is to find your balance, but ultimately, go for it. Consider the knowledge you’ll need, the time it’ll take to build proficiency, and the success you intend to achieve once you’ve achieved your new career goals. Know that following your passion is something you’re worthy of, even (and especially) in the face of adversity. And remember that in your life, you deserve to be happy, and to share your time with meaningful, fulfilling work.
