Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?

Last week, I had the opportunity to introduce myself to a group of new people in a gaming community I’m in (gaming is balm for a jobseeker’s soul, btw), and found myself staring blankly at the introduction form, wondering how to introduce who I am without including the things I do. When defining yourself outside of your work personality, do you include notions from your career to share who you are?
Work takes up a large part of our days, and lives, and is usually the go-to descriptor when networking in most settings. Some understand others better by understanding what they do, but is that the correct way to assess the quality of someone’s character?
For someone seeking work or transitioning careers however, this question of who you are outside of work becomes paramount because it has the potential to unlock new avenues for paid work. Here’s some resources that might help you tell your personal story without including your credentials (or help you get closer to work that feels more aligned to who you are):
The next time you have a conversation with someone new, introduce yourself without mentioning anything about your work, and see how it changes how you talk about work in the full story of who you are.
