staying busy- a weekly dose of positivity + productivity for jobseekers

Hooray! šŸŽ‰ A new week is here. For every 5 job search activities you do this week, perform 1 act of self-care that takes a few hours.

In this one:

Is AI replacing my job?

This is something Iā€™ve been thinking about a lot recently, as reports and talking heads estimate that over 300 million jobs could be replaced by AI. While the rapid development and proliferation of AI seems to have come overnight, with tools like ChatGPT said to already outperform in some mid-level jobs, its technology thatā€™s been used and developed for many years prior. Like in the movies, it seems weā€™re at an inflection point- will we use AI for good, or allow it to overtake us with perilous intent?

Fear not. Hereā€™s a few groups working toward the responsible use of AI in tech and other industries:

  • All Tech is Human works to share information and assemble around the responsible use of AI in various industries.

  • The Partnership on AI helps to bring a diverse perspective to the development of AI, with a focus on investigating attrition among women and minority populations within AI spaces.

  • AI for Good builds technical solutions toward creating a more sustainable future.

And hereā€™s a few ways that you can personally use AI to benefit your job search:Ā

Iā€™d like to believe that weā€™ve created a tool, just like many others we have in our collective toolbelts, to make our lives easier. That while AI seems magical, it actually takes a lot of human work. And that the episode of Black Mirror wonā€™t come true, because weā€™ll have the foresight to realize the human energy in all human-centered creations. What do you think? Write in and Iā€™ll share job-related AI thoughts in the next newsletter. šŸ˜Ā

Letā€™s talk about changing careersā€¦

Are you experiencing a season of reinvention like I am? Hereā€™s a few wise words from Laura Sheehan about the experience and exercise of changing careers:

If you have a empty piece of paper, some old magazines, a pair of scissors, and a glue stick handy, start collaging.

Collaging is the art of putting random images together to create anew. Whether its vintage images or surreal landscapes, take some time this week to try your hand some art.

Hereā€™s a piece I made called ā€˜currently transcendingā€™:

Creating collages illustrating the thoughts, feels, and range of emotions experienced through my current job search process has been meditative, therapeutic, and healing. Give it a try- I hope it helps in your journey!

Alright friends, see ya next week. Hope you find that thing that feels good. ā™„
